Ailments and Remedies (that work)

Screen Shot 2017-01-06 at 11.37.19 AM.png

Since my first child started growing inside of me I changed my ways. I was a smoker (occasional to habitual and back to occasional again) and I used “drugs” for all my ailments. Headache = Ibuprofen. Cold = Antihistamine. And on and on, like every other blue blooded American. The pharmaceutical industry is HUGE and getting bigger every year, all so that we can keep popping pills all day every day for no reason. Now I am aware I am not a doctor, but I also know that taking ibuprofen everyday has serious consequences on your health and body. Actually, taking any medicine on a weekly basis is ruining your body slowly each day. It’s a horrible cycle that we learn from birth and are told it’s no big deal. A pill for every ill.

Healthiest Formula for your Baby

Screen Shot 2015-02-16 at 9.20.33 AM

There are so many reasons your baby may need formula and none of us expect it to happen to us, until it does. You may feel down about this happening to you, but you can’t beat yourself up about it. Your baby will thrive and be as healthy as any other baby no matter what you chose to do. Unfortunately it isn’t as easy as going to you local grocery store chain and buying the formula off the shelf, or even using a sample of formula given to you by your doctor. I have a long standing beef with the Food and Drug Administration in this country which I will not go into here, but I have learned since having kids not to trust anything off the shelf anymore. Most of the products you see on our shelves in America have ingredients that are banned in many countries. Crazy right? So when you are faced with a formula decision and are staring at the endless brands before you, don’t feel overwhelmed. Here is the best article I have ever found comparing each organic formula and the ingredients they contain to help you make the best choice for you and your baby.

Now, maybe you don’t want to jump into buying formula and would like to make your own? Formulas can be very very expensive and even the best ones have preservatives, so making your own at home will not only save you tons of money, but will be the healthiest option for your baby if they cannot have breast milk. It sounds like it would be hard to do, but in reality it’s very easy and only takes up to 10 minutes to make a day. This homemade option is fresh, healthy, and full of all the nutrients your baby needs to thrive without ingredients you may not want. Here is a full breakdown on how to make several types of formula (including options if your baby has a milk allergy) and also an amazing instructional video taking you through the steps. Again, if you have the energy, this is the best and most healthy option for your baby if breast milk is not an option.

Just remember you are an amazing mother, breast-feeding or not. And your baby will be happy, full of yummy food and grow to be big and strong with these wonderful and nutritious options.

Replacing your Medicine Cabinet – Essential Oils

Screen Shot 2014-11-17 at 2.50.43 PM

Wow, has my life been changed by using these guys. I’m an idiot. A good friend told me all about these about 2 years ago and while I did listen, I never fully explored or embraced the uses of essential oils. I loved them, I felt that they made my house smell amazing, but I didn’t fully encompass the healing powers until now. Flash forward to my second baby, little to no sleep, desperate, and I am reminded by several other mothers that essential oils may do the trick to help my baby sleep through the night (after I also break him of the atrociously bad sleep habits I had aided him in forming as well). My first night using essential oils on my 6 month old and IMMEDIATELY he sleeps 12 hours through the night and blew my mind. THE FIRST NIGHT. Talk about instant results!!!

Plastic Alternatives in the Household

Screen Shot 2014-11-14 at 10.31.46 AM

Plastic is awful. I mean, it’s convenient and is easy to use and comes in all kinds of fun colors and patterns to seduce us, but underneath all that flirtation is a big skull and crossbones. I know, but my plastic is BPA free! Ok, good for your plastic. But scary new research has come out reporting that “almost all” commercially available BPA free plastics that were tested leached synthetic estrogens—even when they weren’t exposed to conditions known to unlock potentially harmful chemicals, such as the heat of a microwave, the steam of a dishwasher, or the sun’s ultraviolet rays. According to research, some BPA-free products actually released synthetic estrogens that were more potent than BPA. AH!!!

Okay, so I glance in my pantry and see that although I know I shouldn’t really be using plastics, I still have quite a bit that I use on a regular basis. Damn. Baby bottles, Continue reading

DIY Facial Peels for Great Looking Skin

Screen Shot 2014-10-20 at 1.27.02 PM

Nothing like adding another baby to your family to guarantee you will look 10 years older overnight. Not to mention the fun filled summer that came and went where we all took our fun vacations and our faces got a nice healthy dose of Vitamin D sunshine. Maybe too healthy of a dose. Now the nice tan is fading and all that’s left is some beaten down skin with a few extra crows feet. And maybe like me you’re unable to just sleep yourself back into looking beautiful due to a crazy 6 month old and an energetic toddler. BUT you don’t actually NEED to go spend a few hundred dollars to refresh your face and get back its glow. The key to a successful peel is right in your kitchen, and with a little elbow grease you will be able to do it all yourself! Here are a few fail safe recipes for all skin types that seriously work:

Drinking Water, how healthy is it really?

Screen Shot 2014-09-18 at 1.46.33 PM

This is a topic I have been researching for over a year now. The down low is, our drinking water is awful. Bad. Yuck. Disgusting. So we buy Brita and filter the bad stuff away right? Wrong. Brita doesn’t remove a thing. It may slightly improve the taste but you are drinking regular ole tap water. So we buy bottled water. Safe? Nope. Tested in a lab, most bottled water reads at the same contaminate levels as tap. So what the heck are we supposed to do? This is why it took me a year to write this post……

Now Keaton has begun gnawing at his little fists like crazy and wriggling around like his gums are on fire. I know it’s time to take serious action. Natural action that is. Here are the top favs in our house when it comes to battling these babies and their teeth (or lack there of)……..

Oh My Liver……..Oil

Screen Shot 2014-07-20 at 9.09.19 AM

Ladies and gentlemen, I have stumbled upon the most amazing and grossest item in my daily regime and I must share. I was on set last week talking to one of my favorite producers about health and wellness, a subject I am obsessed with in which he knows a lot about. I love picking his brain because he is wise to all the workings of the human body, remedies for illness through diet, everything. So long story short, he shared with me an alarming nugget of wisdom. I found out last year I was Vitamin D deficient,

I have found a few products and tricks that I could not live without. Being a Makeup Artist, I get free things sent to me all the time in the hopes that I use them on Celebrity clients. Some are good, some are bad, and some are downright amazing. Some I even find on my own. Here they are.

Biodegradable City

We have always used biodegradable diapers in our home and tried to stop using other deposable anythings like cups, straws, paper towels etc. But if you take a look at the amount of plastic that goes into just making the trash bags and zip lock bags we use, it’s enough to make someone cry. Straight into our planet for the next million years for our children’s children to deal with. There are AMAZING alternatives that I have found, and if you have Amazon Prime you get them shipped free, without tax. I just wanted to share some bags that are as good (if not better) than the ones you are using that are killing our planet. Here ya go!

Two alternatives to rock your world (and save it).

Heavy Duty Garbage Bags (for your kitchen bins):

Freezer Bags:

Both are right on Amazon and easy as pie to have delivered within 2 days, shipping is FREE. Hopefully these help, I have tried a number of companies with weak bags and these stand the true test. Enjoy!

Glass Bottle Maintenance (a.k.a. Algae Anyone?)

Last year I switched out all of my plastic from my cupboards for glass mainly because of all the health related research that has been published over the last year about plastic leaching chemicals like BPA and other nasty things contributing to Miscarriages, Alzheimer’s and Cancer etc. The FDA has yet to make a final call on banning some of these chemicals in our plastic so obviously we have to do a preemptive strike and protect ourselves first. No use being the guinea pig! So we switched out all of out Tupperware and drinking containers for glass and it has been absolutely wonderful. I did run into one tiny problem with glass though, in the carafes and water bottles I began to notice a light green film at the bottom, algae. I am not afraid of algae, some is even good for you. But no, no I don’t want algae in my drinking water. And in some of my bottles it is downright impossible to get in there and clean the bottom. So, I googled a way to get the algae out and was SHOCKED to hear advice telling me to use BLEACH!!! Seriously OMG. I would drink algae any day of the week before I put a downright POISON in my beautiful glasses to clean them!! I was laughing out loud, but at the same time I had no solution to my problem. And now I do.

Earache Remedy

Screen Shot 2014-01-02 at 8.47.07 AM

So poor poor little Jack got a horrible ear infection when we went to Ireland last year which escalated into such a disastrous situation that he needed 2 doses of antibiotics. Nightmare. Poor kid. I of course never saw a sign or even knew what to look for, I thought he just had a regular old cold. So this time around, our family for Christmas decided to bond together and all get a cold at the same time, AND to spread that cold to all of the aunts and grandparents as well. Christmas spirit and all, why wouldn’t we? Now that we are all better, I notice Jack tugging on his ears. It isn’t anything yet, but I see the warning signs beginning. A trip to the doctor confirmed it is the beginning of an ear infection (post trauma sets in from my last experience) and they of course want him on antibiotics. I, on the other hand, would like to share a recipe that you can try in the beginning or even middle stages of an earache to try and solve the problem before having to resort to antibiotics. This is a powerful and effective alternative that I highly recommend, and the less antibiotics you give your child the better. This remedy is known to work every time as long as it isn’t chaos madness like our Ireland experience. All these ingredients result in a strong natural antibiotic. It’s great for adults too! Here you go!

Unbeatable Homemade Baby Wipes

Screen Shot 2013-12-09 at 9.12.22 PM

No one likes their baby wipes! Or at least no one I know. They are expensive, they never clean the whole mess, they aren’t durable, the list goes on and on. I find ALL baby wipes, including Honest Wipes (which I do like and use), NEVER get all the (sorry to be blunt) poop particles off the tush. If you haven’t already, please give a try to my Homemade Tush Spray. I spray this on before I wipe Jack and it gently and cleanly removes EVERYTHING leaving Jack left with a crystal clean surface that my he loves. (Never had Diaper Rash). It’s only a few ingredients from your kitchen and takes under a minute to make.It may be the best homemade and not homemade product I have ever used, we have one in every room of the house as well as his diaper bag. If an earthquake happened, I would save the Tush Spray above my home computer.

ANYWAYS, wipes are expensive and usually total crap. Here is a great recipe for wipes you can make at home and will rock more than the crappy wipes you despise at this very moment. I know it seems weird but I think if you try it once you will never go back.  *I would still use the Tush Spray with these just to make baby extra clean. Here’s the recipe……

All Natural Cleaner

When I use most floor cleaners to mop my floors, I’m usually left walking around on a sticky but clean surface. I don’t have hours to clean the floor and then rinse them all over again with water to remove any residue. I like to clean, but I don’t LOVE to clean. Not that much. And, you already know I have stopped all usage of toxic chemicals in my house as well, so I have been using Wholefoods bought natural stuff. This STILL leaves my floor a tad bit sticky after I use it. Clean, but sticky.

SO! Here is the easiest recipe of all time and it is 100% natural and won’t cause harm to your health or your family’s health AND gets your floor (and house) super clean and bacteria free!!!!!!!

1. Fill sink or bucket with warm water

2. Add 1 healthy squirt Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap

3. Add 1 cup White Vinegar

4. Add 10 drop Tea Tree Oil

5. Add the juice from from 1 Lemon

That’s it folks. Clean floors, clean house, clean toilets, clean conscious, happy planet, happy baby, happy husband, and happy mommy. No sticky residue, and the combination of ingredients will have your house sparkling and germ free. Enjoy!
