I am getting eaten alive. Summertime kills me every single year, and I am taking matters into my own hands. Store bought bug repellents are one of the most toxic chemical combinations you can buy to put on your skin. Like, really bad. Like you might as well just smoke a cigarette kind of bad. So I usually go with nothing and get massacred by any and all bugs. It doesn’t help that I am allergic and end up with tumor sized bites all over my body either, so brutal. But I digress. Here is a wonderful bug spray recipe that so far has worked for me and can be used in cream or spray form. If I get bit, I will follow this up with the all mighty powerful and not so great smelling alternative that will blow all the bugs (and husbands) out of the water. In a bad way.
Here is the yummy smelling version for now:
- A small spray bottle or cream bottle (CVS or Rite Aid int he travel section)
- Essential Oils: Lavendar, Rosemary, Mint, Eucalyptus
- Witch Hazel (for spray version) or Unscented Lotion
Pretty straight forward: add essential oils to the carrier of your choice. Be very mindful of the amount of oil you add, as too much can be irritating to the skin. I added a total of around 55 drops per 8oz, but the oils I am using are not anywhere near the potency of a pure brand like DoTerra. I have oils from Wholefoods that are less full on and can be played around with a bit more. I say depending on your oil, do a trial and error type mixture, add more if you need to. This mixture will keep the bugs off and you will still be smelling good! Smelling great actually!!!
